Coblentz Presidents' Messages

Current President's Message

Greetings vibrational spectroscopy aficionados,

On behalf of the Coblentz Society, I would like to say thank you for your scientific contributions to the field of vibrational spectroscopy.  The Coblentz Society is a non-profit organization of persons interested in fostering the understanding and application of vibrational spectroscopy within the fields of Chemistry, Physics, and Biology.  If you are not a member, I sincerely hope that you will not only consider becoming one, but an active one.  The Coblentz Society has much to offer and we think you do as well.

To our members, I give tremendous thanks for your service to the Coblentz Society.  Through your membership and service, we are able to bestow prestigious awards to students, academics, and industrialists, to organize quality and representative spectroscopy focused sessions at conferences, to provide networking opportunities, and to deliver resources to advance your scientific endeavors.  By encouraging the visibility, recognition, and community of quality science, we hope to highlight solutions and chart new opportunities in vibrational spectroscopy.

Immediate efforts of the Coblentz Society include, but are not limited to; collaborating more with Infrared and Raman Discussion Group (IRDG) given our similar goals, adding a new virtual lecture series, assisting the Spectroscopists Helping Spectroscopists program to support our colleagues impacted by Hurricane Maria, and formation of a lifetime membership option.  Additionally, I will be reaching out to ask for your volunteer efforts whether serving on a committee, as a board member, an officer, an awards chairperson, or helping out with our booth.  Lastly, I would like to recognize and give tremendous thanks to Ian Lewis, our latest honorary Coblentz Society member awardee.  Ian, you have given so much to the Coblentz Society by serving as a board member, treasurer, president, and countless other things.  It is tremendous people like you that make the Coblentz Society great and for that we are truly grateful.

I am humbled to serve such a great group of vibrational spectroscopists and to follow all the great Coblentz Society officers and board members before me.  Members, I welcome your suggestions of how to better engage you and to increase the Society’s “impact factor.”

Wishing you satisfaction in your vibrational spectroscopic endeavors,

Brandye Smith-Goettler

President of the Coblentz Society
